In a bid to honour the effort put in by the supporting staff at Academic City on International Labour Day, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) gifted them smartphones.

Over 60 workers including gardeners, cleaners and maintenance staff, were also trained on how to use their new mobile devices.

“We chose this project because we want to share knowledge and raise awareness on smart devices and how they can be used,” said Hind Al Mualla, Chief of Engagement at KHDA.

According to a recent study by the United Nations, the increased use of mobile devices encourages reading, and, as a result, literacy rates in developing countries are improving.

“The workers will have access to KHDA’s wireless internet and will be taught how to use their new devices by KHDA employees who speak Hindi or Urdu. The Academic City support staff provide an excellent service and this is our way of thanking them.”

The initiative has been partially sponsored by Modern Building Maintenance (MBM), while the rest of the funds were raised by KHDA employees.

In addition to the smartphones, UAE Nashama Volunteers have sent gifts for labourers as part of the “Through Their Eyes “campaign. These gifts include firstaid kits and caps to protect outdoor workers from sun.
