A fire broke out in a compound in the Greens on Sunday evening. The fire has been extinguished and no injuries have been reported.
The fire broke out at around 20.30 in an apartment on the ground floor of Al Thayyal 2. According to civil defense forces on the ground the fire broke out in the kitchen of the apartment, which is occupied by a couple.
Although the fire had not spread to other apartments, a blanket of thick black smoke quickly spread through the apartments on the same level. “The smoke entered my apartment,” tells Uffe Nielsen, a Danish resident in the compound.
“When I heard the fire alarm I did not direct immediately, but when I saw the smoke I realized that there was something wrong.”
Residents of the compound were instructed to leave their apartments by the security personnel and gathered in the play area or on the main street, where they waited until the fire had been extinguished.
“I heard the fire alarm and a security guard told me to leave my apartment. I went to the playground and was finally invited by a neighbouring friend, where I could put my children to sleep. My youngest daughter is still awake, she refused to go to bed,” narrates Nicole, a Lebanese resident in the compound.
At around 21.30 police at the site cleared the area and told the residents they could return to their apartments. Elevators are not working at the point of this writing.
