The two Azerbaijanis who drove their car in opposite directions of traffic flow, received four years in jail each.

The Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance also ordered JA, 32, transport manager and QS, 31, salesman, who was driving the car to be deported after serving their jail terms.

On March 5, at around 8pm, policeman Abdullah Mohammed was patrolling near Baniyas Square. At an intersection, he noticed that a Hyundai car was not moving and blocking traffic, although the traffic signals had turned green.

“I stopped and my colleague went to the driver to check. After a few minutes, my colleague returned and told me that the engine of the car was not running as the gear was on ‘D’ and not the ‘N’ position. He just asked him to put the gear in the ‘N’ position and the engine started.

“Immediately after my colleague said this, we saw the same car being driven in the opposite direction of the traffic, causing chaos for cars,” the policeman told investigators.

The two policemen got off their patrol vehicle and went to the car. “We noticed that the passenger was in abnormal condition and unable to talk. Thinking he was sick, we called for an ambulance. The ambulance came and the medical staff said he could be under the influence of drugs,” said the policeman.

The driver QS, 31, salesman, and the passenger JA, 32, manager, were tested positive to hashish. The two admitted to taking drugs and alcohol and driving under the influence of drugs and driving in the opposite direction of the traffic.
