The 2014 Fifa World Cup is heating up on all fronts. Teams are getting into goal-scoring mode, with Brazil hitting form in a 4-1 win over Cameroon.

The party is on in Rio like never before.

Algeria, Costa Rica and the USA are providing the fairy tale stories.

And then there are the conspiracy theories.

Ghana is in the eye of one storm.

Now, this picture, which emerged first in social media and has since drawn enough support online and off, for a campaign to be in play, puts New Zealand referee Peter O'Leary at the heart of a potential scandal.

Several top newspapers across the world have re-printed the picture and Fifa has yet to comment.

The story behind it is that Bosnia and Herzegovina bowed out of the tournament in a 1-0 defeat to Nigeria.

The match had several contentious decisions made by referee Peter O'Leary.

Dzeko was denied a goal when he was incorrectly ruled offside.

In fact, so incensed was Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko after the game, that his criticism of the referee was scathing.

When asked what happened, he said, “The referee happened. We are going home, we are sad because of that, but the referee should go home too, because he changed the result, he changed the game, and that’s why we lost.”

Against that backdrop this photo has emerged, showing O’Leary with Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama at the full-time whistle.

The Bosnians’ online petition asking O'Leary to be fired has over 23,000 signatures.
