Chinese smartphone maker Oppo has once again reclaimed the race for the world’s slimmest smartphone.
Its latest flagship device the Oppo R5 is just 4.85mm thick with a dimension of 148.9mm x 74.5mm x 4.85mm.
To put it in context, the iPhone 6 which was measured against a pencil by Tim Cook is 8.9mm thick.
Oppo, meanwhile, overtook the previous thinnest smartphone the Gionee Elife S, which is 5.1mm thick.
In 2012, Oppo had released the Oppo Finder, which at 6.65mm was the slimmest device on the planet at that point of time.
The R5 features a 5.2-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) Amoled display with 423ppi, a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor, 2GB of RAM.
The device also features a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front facing camera and can record videos at 4K at 30 frames per second, 1080p video at 60 fps and 720p slow motion video at 120 fps.
The device has a metallic finish and according to Oppo has a combination of elements that tries to prevent the device from heating up.
“Our phase-shifting material is made of metal, resin and other composite materials. When heat is generated, the material begins to change.
“This material not only absorbs any heat; it also radically improves thermal efficiency,” the company says, describing features.
The battery has been improved as well. The 2000mAh battery features VOOC charging which by charging for just 5 minutes can give you a two-hour phone call or will power up by 75 per cent with a 30 minutes recharge.
The device is priced at around $500 (Dh1,800) and could be available in the UAE before the year-end.
