A total of 24 people have died and 33 were seriously injured in 157 accidents on key arteries leading into the emirate of Abu Dhabi in the first half of the year.

The accidents took place on the Dubai-Abu Dhabi, Al Ain-Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi-Silla highways, during peak hours in the mornings and afternoons.

Colonel Khamis Ishaq Mohammed, Deputy Director, Traffic and Patrols, Abu Dhabi Police, attributed the increase in accidents on these roads to the density of traffic during peak hours.

“At key times in the morning and evening, a large number of staff and workers who live outside the city of Abu Dhabi, but work within it are on the roads.

“Some of them are driving at high speeds in order to make up time. This consequently results in reckless driving, exceeding of speed limits, illegal use of the road shoulders and cutting traffic lights,” Colonel Khamis Mohammed said.

Colonel Mohammed appealed to employees commuting to Abu Dhabi for work to try and get housing closer to their places of work to avoid the rigors of commuting and driving long hours every day.

He also called on transport companies to abide by the traffic rules and not to over-load the vehicles.
