Latest Man United transfer news: Herrera, Fellaini in final countdown

The Manchester United fans for the first time in the last 10 years are getting to know what it feels like to be an Arsenal fan.

Three games into the season – win, draw, loss.

No big name signing.

A team full of talent, but devoid of inspiration, spark and ideas.

The only difference really is, the manager at Old Trafford is new.

Arsene Wenger has put the Gooners through that for the last eight years.

The Red Devils will not want to go more than one season with a “settling in, but no trophy” period.

Sunday’s performance against Liverpool was almost Evertonian like in terms of domination of possession but no scoring of goals.

As David Moyes rang the changes late in the second half – Nani, Chicharito – it seemed more in desperation than in devious strategy.

The presence of a 39-year-old Ryan Giggs playing the full 90 also smacks of desperation. Surely Giggsy’s role must be a last 20-minute cameo, or a FA Cup appearance to rest some of the other stars.

As the clock ticks down today towards the close of the transfer window Moyes must know that he has a doughnut team.

Well-rounded all over with a huge hole in the middle.

Tom Cleverley and Michael Carrick need an outlet to release the ball to; someone who can pick it up and with the touch of a David Silva, Yaya Toure or even Coutinho, spark a defence-splitting pass.

Is Marouanne Fellaini the one to do that?

Is Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao the one?

Or, is it Mesuit Ozil?

The tension in the air around Old Trafford will be palpable as the clock runs down and arch-rivals Arsenal suddenly seem to have a trophy-team again.

The unthinkable will be for Manchester United to let Liverpool back into the top 4.

It is time for David Moyes to do the business.
