In response to reader queries on how to activate the WhatsApp free voice calling feature for iOS – on the iPhone or iPad – here is a short primer on how to go about it.

As Emirates 24|7 reported earlier this morning, WhatsApp has not yet started offering free VoIP calls to iPhone users but its voice calling feature on Android and BlackBerry is going mainstream.

Users have reported that the new voice calling feature for iOS is enabled in the latest beta version of WhatsApp Messenger (version 2.12.0.1).

Do note, however, that installing Cydia can only be done on your 'jailbroken' iPhones and iPads, and that software is not approved by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL).

Installing WhatsApp Beta on your iPhone in 4 simple steps

#1 Install WhatsApp beta 2.12.0.1 on your iPhone. A simple Google search of WhatsApp beta 2.12.0.1 will do, or you could download and install it on your device from the WhatsApp.net site.

#2 Add iMokholes repository to your list oif Cydia sources. After installing the WhatsApp beta version on your device, launch Cydia and add this repo to the Cydia sources.

#3 Enable WhatsAppCallEnabler from Setting. Once you’ve added the iMokholes repo, install WhatsAppCallEnabler from the settings of the application.

#4 Receive a call from an ‘enabled’ WhatsApp contact.
Launch WhatsApp and ask a friend who has the Voice Calling feature activated to call you. Once you receive that call (the person doesn’t need to be on your contacts list), WhatsApp calling will be activated on your iPhone.

Disclaimer: This news article is for information purposes only. Emirates 24|7 does not recommend 'jailbreaking' your devices. Installing Cydia can only be done on your 'jailbroken' iPhones and iPads, and that software is not approved by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL).
