Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic powered home a header in extra time to send his side to the League Cup final with a 1-0 victory over Liverpool in a rip-roaring second leg at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

The Serbian defender rose unmarked and craned his neck to muscle a header past Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet four minutes into extra time to secure a 2-1 aggregate win for the four-times winners.

Both sides had good chances in normal time and were grateful to their keepers - Thibaut Courtois and Mignolet - for keeping the scores level in a blood-and-thunder encounter at Stamford Bridge with plenty of controversy.

Chelsea striker Diego Costa was typically in the thick of the action and twice appeared to stamp on Liverpool players, but should also have been awarded a penalty when he was felled by Martin Skrtel in the first half.

Chelsea will face either Tottenham Hotspur or Sheffield United, who play the second leg of their last-four clash on Wednesday, in the final at Wembley.

Full time

Branislav Ivanovic netted the winner in the fourth minute of extra time against Liverpool to take Chelsea into the final of the Capital One Cup where they will take on either Tottenham or Sheffield United.

At the Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night both teams were goalless after 90 minutes of their second leg semi-final. But Ivanovic rose above the Liverpool defenders to nod home Willian's free-kick and settle the issue after the two giant Premier League clubs had fought out a 1-1 draw in the first leg at Anfield last week.

Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho was magnanimous in victory.

"I think in the second half today we were better than them and also in extra time. To be honest and fair with them (Liverpool), they were there. A very difficult opponent. We beat a very good team over two legs."

120" One minute extra time added.

118" Drogba make his presence replacing Willian in dying minutes.

115" YELLOW! Skrtel is booked making it the eighth card of the match.

111" YELLOW! Emre Can is booked.

109" Liverpool make some desperate attempts with Balotelli trying for goal from an acute angle.

105" Lambert replaces Moreno as Liverpool look for goal.

103" Balotelli does some neat work on the right then sends a diagonal pass to Sterling on top of the box. With his back to the goal he turns quickly and shoots but wide.

101" YELLOW! Gerrard and Costa get into a wrestling match and both are booked,

98" Henderson will rue this open chance after he received a near perfect cross from Sterling but his header, in front of a gaping goal, went over.

94" GOAL! Ivanovic heads home from a Willian free-kick.

90+4" With neither team scoring the match has gone into another half an hour of extra-time according to the new rules of this tournament.

90" Four minues of stoppage time added.

88" YELLOW! Ivanovic is booked after pulling down Sterling. A free-kick is given but Gerrard makes a mess of it.

87" Sterling's off-balance shot is wide. Both teams desperate to get that one goal which could settle the tie.

86" Hazard tries an ambitious-looking shot from the halfway line but Mignolet is quick on his feet.

82" Hazard is brilliant on the left side but his hard work is not complemented by a wayward Costa.

79" Coutinho and Balotelli work in tandem with Coutinho taking a crack at goal but the ball richochets off a defender onto Gerrard who tries an acrobatic half volley.

76" Filipe Luis walks out injured and Cesar Azpilicueta replaces him.

73" YELLOW! John Terry is booked for a tackle on Sterling.

69" Mario Balotelli comes in for Markovic.

68" Ramires has his first touch of the ball and without wasting time lets fly a powerful right footer which sails not very far from the post.

66" YELLOW! Henderon is booked for what looked like an unintentional handball.

65" Play has opened up and now it's Liverpool with a chance but Sterling is denied by Courtois.

64" Mignolet makes a crucial save depriving Costa from hand-shaking distance.

63" Skrtel is again in the way off an Oscar shot but thanks to Mignolet who is alert under the bar.

59" Mignolet keeps Liverpool in the match with a superb save after Costa's shot deflects off Skrtel. Chelsea seem to have woken up from their slumber.

57" Hazard manoeuvres past three defenders in a jiffy and has a shy with his left foot but the ball goes agonisingly past the post to the dismay of Hazard who holds his head in his hands.

54" Sakho is replaced by Johnson.

51" YELLOW! Lucas is booked but not after Sakho almost gifted Chelsea a goal on a platter when his intended backpass went to Oscar who made a solo dash but was brought down hardshly by Lucas.

48" Fabregas is replaced by Ramires.

47" Willian to Hazard on the left flank. The Belgian speeds past a defender and forces Skrtel to make a desperate clearance which could have resulted in an own goal.

Action kicks off in the second half.

45" Just a minute of stoppage time added.

43" Coutinho troubles Chelsea on the left flank, makes one of his speedy runs and has a crack which hits a defender for a corner.

41" YELLOW! Henderson is booked.

38" Oscar tests Mignolet again with a lot shot from 25 yards which beats the outstretched hands of the goalkeeper but goes narrowly past goal.

37" Oscar earns a free-kick for Chelsea and takes it too but his angled shot goes across the face of the goal.

33" Livewire Coutinho again breaks free and finds Gerrard who puts Moreno in the clear but his shot fails to get past a congested defence.

29" Another superb save by Courtois putiing his long left leg out to deflect Coutinho's shot from close for a corner.

27" At the other end Lucas has a shy at the Liverpool goal but is wide off target.

26" Gerrard's inch-perfect ball to Moreno but Courtois brings off a brilliant save narrowing Moreno's angle to make a stop.

22" Costa is brought down in the box by Skrtel but referee Michael Oliver says play on. That's sure to provoke Mourinho into making some harsh statements after the match.

20" Skrtel makes a timely block off Costa's shot and off the rebound Willian shoots to Mignolet.

17" Chelsea are almost exposed from a counter-attack by Liverpool but Sterling instead of passing it to an unmarked Gerrard overdid his dribbling and Zouma cleared.

15" Gerrard finds Markovic on the right who speeds with the ball into the box but is tackled nicely by Nemanja Matic.

12" Moreno earns a corner for Liverpool after Fabregas does well to block him but the result is futile.

10" Both teams playing a little defensively, more the wait and watch tactic.

5" Diego Costa weaves his way into the Liverpool area and backpasses for Willian who is a bit late as Lucas Leiva makes a timely clearance.

3" Willian tries to find Hazard with a long ball but Skrtel heads it backwards to goalkeeper Mignolet.

Another high-stakes match gets underway amid a sea of blue.

We are just 15 minutes away from kick-off between Chelsea and Liverpool in the second leg of the Capital One Cup at Stamford Bridge. The first leg at Anfield ended 1-1 but Brendan Rodgers sounded confident of a Liverpool win ahead of the match as both teams limber up.

Daniel Sturridge was declared unfit to take the field for Liverpool but Steven Gerrard makes his return along with Martin Skrtel. Both missed Saturday's FA Cup match against Bolton. For Chelsea, Branislav Ivanovic and Zouma return to strengthen the defence while Oscar replaces Mikel.

TEAMS

Chelsea: Courtois, Ivanovic, Zouma, Terry, Filipe Luis, Fabregas, Matic, Willian, Oscar, Hazard, Diego Costa. Subs: Cech, Ake, Ramires, Drogba, Remy, Cahill, Azpilicueta.

Liverpool: Mignolet, Can, Skrtel, Sakho, Henderson, Lucas, Gerrard, Moreno, Markovic, Sterling, Coutinho. Subs: Johnson, Lovren, Lambert, Lallana, Allen, Balotelli, Ward.

Team News

Chelsea are set to recall key players such as Branislav Ivanovic, John Terry, Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic, who sat out the FA Cup defeat to Bradford City.

John Obi Mikel (head) and Andre Schurrle (back) are injury doubts.

Liverpool will assess striker Daniel Sturridge, who is back in training after a long-term thigh problem.

Steven Gerrard and Martin Skrtel could return after being rested at the weekend, while it remains to be seen whether Mario Balotelli earns a recall.

Stat Attack

Chelsea

The 4-2 defeat to Bradford City on Saturday was the Blues' first loss in 17 league and cup games at Stamford Bridge (including 16 matches this season).

It was also the first time a side coached by Jose Mourinho has conceded four goals in a home game.

The Blues have scored at least twice in each of their last 13 games at Stamford Bridge in all competitions.

Chelsea have won the League Cup four times, including 2005 and 2007 under Mourinho. They were also runners-up in 2008, and lost in the semi-finals to Swansea two seasons ago.

In 11 previous semi-final appearances, the Blues have reached the final just six times.

Liverpool

The Reds have won five successive away games in all competitions since their 3-0 defeat at Manchester United on 14 December.

Liverpool are the most successful club in League Cup history with eight trophies and 11 finals.

But this is only the second time Liverpool have progressed beyond the fourth round in seven seasons; on the other occasion (2011-12) they went on to win the competition.

The Reds have progressed through their last four semi-finals in the League Cup since going out to Middlesbrough. Of their previous 14 appearances in the last four, Liverpool have reached the final on 11 occasions.

Steven Gerrard has scored one goal in 37 career appearances against Chelsea in all competitions.

Probable Formations

Cheslea: 4-2-3-1

Liverpool: 3-4-3-1

Preview

Liverpool will go into Tuesday's second leg of the Capital One Cup against Chelsea as favourites.

The reason being the Londoners currently look like ‘wounded tigers’ after their shock home defeat to Bradford in the FA Cuip on Saturday and after watching their dismal show against the Merseysiders in the first leg where they were lucky to earn a penalty and leave Anfield with a draw, Jose Mourinho surely has his task cut out.

The Portuguese could make one change bringing Oscar in for John Obi Mikel to add sharpness to the attack which lacked the bite in the first leg.

The options are running out for Mourinho. If they fail to progress it means Chelsea will have only the Premier League title and the Champions League to play for after making a premature exit from the FA Cup.

On the other hand Brendan Rodgers is brimming with confidence. And why not, there are chances that his striker Daniel Sturridge, who scored 25 goals last season, could make a long-awaited return from injury.

Captain Steven Gerrard, who was rested for Saturday’s FA clash with Bolton, is also likely to return to strengthen the midfield, while Martin Skrtel should be back to added solidity to the defence.

The only doubt which remains is that of Mario Balotelli, who is perceived to have an attitude problem although coach Rodgers insists that the Italian has a future at Anfield.

A photo posted on Twitter on Tuesday, carried by ‘Al Bayan’ newspaper, shows the damage caused to the FlyDubai airplane due to bullets fired while it was landing at Baghdad Airport.

Al Bayan reports that initial investigations suggest the gun-shots came from a wedding being held at the time.

Earlier reports

A Flydubai aircraft reportedly came under fire just as it landed at Baghdad International Airport on Monday, January 26, 2015.

An airline spokesperson confirmed the incident, stating the matter is under investigation but added in a later update that preliminary investigations suggest that the airline's aircraft may not have been the target of the small arms fire and that the shots may have been unintentional.

“After landing at Baghdad International Airport (BGW) on January 26, 2015, damage to the aircraft fuselage consistent with small arms fire was discovered on Flydubai flight FZ 215, the spokesperson said.

“All the passengers disembarked normally through the jet bridge. No medical attention was required at the airport.

As part of the ongoing investigation, Flydubai is working with the authorities to understand the circumstances that led to the damage of its aircraft. Preliminary information indicates that the damage sustained is consistent with small arms fire and at this early stage appears to be non-intentional, the spokesperson said in an emailed statement to Emirates 24|7.

The earlier statement concluded: “Passengers from Baghdad to Dubai were accommodated on a replacement aircraft. An investigation is underway to establish what happened.”

UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs summons Iraqi ambassador

The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has expressed its grave concern over the firing on Monday of gunshots at Flydubai's Dubai-bound flight FZ 215 at Baghdad International Airport.

The MoFA also summoned on Tuesday Iraqi Ambassador to the UAE Muwaffaq Mehdi Abboud to express its grave concern over the incident.

During the meeting, MoFA Undersecretary Mohammed Mer Al Raisi expressed the UAE's concern and demanded that the Iraqi authorities launch a comprehensive investigation in order to identify all the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident, and take necessary measures to enforce international agreements on civil aviation safety and provide the required guarantees and protection.

Iraqi news agency earlier reported two passengers, including a little girl on board, was wounded in the shooting.

'Al Awan' newspaper quoted informed sources in Baghdad saying: “Sources believe the attack was launched from an area close to the runway where the plane landed.”

Emirates, Etihad suspend flight services to Baghdad

Emirates and Etihad Airways have suspended flight  services to Baghdad, until further notice. In an update on its official website, Emirates has cited "operational reasons", further stating: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused to our customers.

In a statement to Emirates 24|7, an airline spokesperson said: “Emirates can confirm that we are suspending our flights to and from Baghdad due to operational and safety concerns.

“This took effect from 26 January until further notice.”

The airline further stated that operations to other cities in Iraq remained unaffected.

The spokesperson continued: “Our services to other points in Iraq – Erbil and Basra continue to operate as scheduled. We remain committed to our customers in Iraq and hope to resume services to Baghdad as soon as operational conditions allow us to do so.

“Our customer service team is contacting affected customers to assist them with making alternative travel arrangements. We apologise for any inconvenience caused. Customers can also check emirates.com for the latest flight status.”

Customers are advised to contact their travel agent or Emirates Call Centers for rebooking options, and visit the website for further updates.”

Meanwhile, Etihad has also posted a travel alert that says: “To comply with the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority ban on operation to and from Baghdad on security grounds, Etihad Airways has suspended all flights to the Iraqi city with immediate effect and until further notice.

“The safety of our customers and employees is always our first priority. We will continue to work closely with the authorities and monitor the security situation before recommencing scheduled services to Baghdad.”

Etihad states it is offering the following options for guests who have already purchased tickets for travel to/from Baghdad: cancellations and refunds permitted free of charge whether the ticket is wholly or partially utilised. The refund on partially utilised ticket will be calculated based on the pro-rata mileage flown.

Any cancellation/refund fees and service fees will be waived. Re-routing and endorsements onto other airlines are not permitted.

Air Arabia

An airline spokesperson stated: “Air Arabia follows the directives issued by the UAE Civil Aviation Authority in regards to the reported incident at Baghdad International Airport.”

Varun clueless on Alia, Sidharth affair

Bollywood stars just need to attend few events and parties together to be labeled as couples by the paparazzi.

That's what happened with Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra.

The duo has been painting the town red at various events with joint appearances. Rumours of their alleged relationship started gaining momentum after they arrived in the same car at actor Ranbir Kapoor's Christmas bash and apparently remained inseparable for the entire night.

Their undisclosed New Year vacation fanned the link-up rumours further. Both were caught at the airport when they returned from their getaway.

While Malaika who was gifting movie merchandise to the crowd was asked by a lens-man to pose. Malaika then asked Arbaaz almost twice to pose which he ignored.

(AFP)

He instead clicked selfie with a fan.

While leaving the venue the couple stood for a customary photo. Even here Arbaaz made no attempt to strike a 'loving husband pose.'

He kept his arm secured inside his jeans pocket.

(AFP)

Later Arbaaz drove off alone in his car but not before having a disinterested word with Malaika who then had to leave in a different car.

Man claims Gauhar paid him to slap her

After the hullabaloo of ‘Bigg Boss 7’ winner Gauahar Khan slapping fiasco, the accused Mohd Akil Malik claims that the actress had paid him to do so, Indian express reported.

While speaking to Zee news, Malik stated that he was a junior artist seeking a big break in the industry and giving him hopes of his gala launch was none other than Gauahar Khan herself, but ofcourse with conditions applied.

Malik claims that the dame had promised to get him a role in Salman Khan’s ‘Dabangg 3’ on condition that he slapped her on the sets of the music reality show ‘India’s Rawstar’. She had also promised that she wouldn’t press any charges against him as this was supposed to be a publicity stunt.

He claims that he did not know Gauahar Khan until November 28 when he waited for her to finish her shoot to inform her that he was a big fan of hers and requested her to help him in his pursuit. However, the actor stated that he had to return the favour.

(AFP)

Malik added, on November 30, the two met in Gauahar’s car where the plans were made. He said, “She told me that I will have to slap her on stage. Gauahar also promised me that she would go and tell the police that she has pardoned me and they would not be able to take any further action against my act. In return, she promised to get me a role in ‘Dabangg 3′. Her driver too was a witness to this entire conversation.”

The reason Malik slapped Gauahar was simply because she donned a skimpy attire which “damages the mind of the youth”, he further added “I grew greedy to get a role in films. Everyone today wants to work in films. Hence I did it.”

Tha actress has however denied such accusations and has asked her lawyer to get back to culprit.

Shah Rukh no to Bigg Boss

Bollywood’s King Khan does not watch reality show ‘Bigg Boss’. But why? We are yet to learn.

(SANSKRITI MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT)

“I am a ‘Bigg Boss’ junkie. I follow all the contestants and I’m thrilled to be hosting it…” Farah also praised Salman calling him a mind-blowing host and said that no one can take his place.

And…she is confident of making Shah Rukh Khan start watching the show, as well. “SRK doesn’t watch Bigg Boss. But if I am hosting, I will make sure he watches it.”

(Getty Images)

"At this juncture in her career, Kareena is not interested in playing the supporting female lead. She did do so in 'Singham Returns' this year. But that was more because Rohit Shetty is a dear friend.

"She is interested in doing the Azharuddin biopic because she hasn't done any biopics yet. She has also not worked with Emraan Hashmi so far.

(Getty Images)

"It all depends on the length of the role. She will be hearing the script from director Tony d'Souza as soon as she returns from her annual vacation in Gstaad in Switzerland."

Good news for Dubai tenants: Expect rental decline, rent-free periods this year

Dubai residents can expect rental declines this year, with landlords even offering rent-free periods to their existing tenants, believes a global real estate consultancy.

“We expect Dubai rents and residential prices to fall up to 10 per cent this year. Lower oil prices will have a limited direct impact on the real estate market in 2015… the impact will be more pronounced in 2016 and beyond if they remain at current low levels,” JLL CEO Alan Robertson said announcing its 2015 Top Trends for UAE Real Estate report.

Although Dubai’s real estate sector witnessed stable rents and prices during the fourth quarter 2014, he believed there was no doubt that the bubble had deflated rather than rapidly burst and the leading question now being asked is “What will be next”.

“For new tenants moving in, we expect landlords to keep the rents the same or reduce them. Existing tenants could get a month rent-free period instead of a rental decline.”

During 2008 and 2010, single apartment owners were luring tenants by offering two to three months of rent-free period in order to have their units occupied. Even property management companies had adopted the same approach.

Craig Plumb, head of research, JLL Mena, said: “While sentiment towards Dubai real estate has softened over the past six months, this cooling of sentiment is a positive in some ways, in that it has reduced the pressure on asset prices that was emerging in 2013 and the first half of 2014.”

The emirate is expected to witness new supply of 25,000 housing units this year.

JLL states car parking, quality road access and public transport will also have greater influence on rents and values.

“The increased level of traffic and the disappearance of ‘sand parking lots’ have combined to highlight the deficiency of parking in many existing projects. As paid parking becomes more commonplace, we would not be surprised if car parks joined education and health care as emerging real estate asset classes in 2015,” it adds.

Emirates 24|7 has reported earlier that developers were selling parking bays at exorbitant prices in Jumeirah Lakes Towers after the parking barriers were installed and free parking limited to mere three hours.

In Dubai Marina, unit owners with additional parking were leasing their underground parking, as residents were unable to get free parking spaces.

A driver has been arrested after authorities say he ran over his passenger twice after arguing with her on the side of a San Francisco Bay Area freeway.

The woman was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.

The Oakland Tribune reports the California Highway Patrol arrested 22-year-old Washington Wiley Jr. of Sacramento following the Monday incident.

The car was traveling on Interstate 680 in San Ramon, a suburb east of San Francisco, when the argument started.

Authorities say the woman got out of the car, and the man drove into her. The driver then reversed the car and struck the woman again, backing over her.

The woman was pulled back into the vehicle, and it drove off. Officers used witness descriptions to track the car and arrest the man.

Bollywood review: Ayushman Khuranna’s ‘Hawaizaada’ fails to take-off

$

Unlike most Bollywood heroes, our man in ‘Hawaizaada’ wants to be the first Indian to fly an airplane, but like many of his peers, he’s unable to shake away his constant need to serenade. So, instead of spending every wakeful hour focusing on how to set a design to flight, he’s busy romancing a dance girl, and fighting social stigmas.

“Marry me,” he repeats so often, that it eventually scares the lady away. And, puts us to sleep!

The woman returns four years later, to find him still hopelessly in love, and conveniently distracts him from his fight path and prompts him to sacrifice his dreams.

Had ‘Hawaizaada’ been less about love, and more about dreams, it would’ve soared to great heights.

Alas, this is Bollywood, and in here, love supersedes all else. Whether it’s the freedom struggle or daring inventions, Bollywood heroes never run out of time or energy to sing and dance, and persist for a kiss.

The first half of the 153-minutes of screen time is entirely focused on Shivy wanting his “first kiss”. It turns into a soppy ‘never been kissed’ routine, where even an Englishman’s tooth finds its way into the madness.

Director Vibhu Virender Puri pens the screenplay and dialogues laboriously, and invests immensely in extravagant frames, but is unable to elevate it to a higher ground.

Shan Mohammed is lazy on the edit, leaving us with innumerable glossy shots of our pretty hero and heroine, and some even of splashing water in slow motion. It’s jarring and disturbs the texture of the narrative.

Although cinematographer Savita Singh’s blue-tinted canvas and the sets by Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray appear inspired by Hollywood’s ‘Sherlock Holmes’ or ‘Moulin Rouge’, it’s remarkable nevertheless.

“Will I be able to fly the airplane,” Vishy frequently quizzes in the second-half, but never quite invests his time into finding the answer. What he does instead, is sing.

Ayushmann Khurrana, though earnest, is unnecessarily exaggerated. He alternates between crinkling his nose and flashing his droopy-eyes. There’s even a song where he steps into Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Barfi’ mode and sways like Chaplin.

His leading lady Pallavi Sharda, who earlier appeared in ‘Besharam’, displays another lethargic performance. She’s pretty, no doubt, but lacks acting talent. There’s even the veteran Mithun Chakraborty hidden under a curly wig and a laughter so fake that he turns Shastri into a caricature.

But, it’s the young Naman Jain who steals our heart with the most genuine performance. Clearly, his seniors have a lot to learn from him.

Despite landing an incredible story about how two Indians crack the first flight but were forgotten by history, Puri dilutes their struggles and efforts by adding numerous inconsequential events and characters.

It ends up in a loop that’s headache-inducing, and forcing us not to care beyond a point.  And that’s unfortunate, considering ‘Hawaizaada’ could’ve translated into something incredibly deep and promising.

An honest Enoc staffer has returned a wallet with Dh21,520 in cash to its owner.

On January 17, Engelbert Ancajas, a 31-year old employee of the Enoc outlet on Al Wasl Road, found a wallet atop the Infiniti Mega Raffle box at the Infiniti booth outside the store.

Without a second thought, Engelbert handed over the wallet to the shift manager.

The wallet contained Dh21,520 in cash in addition to a few IDs and business cards.

In line with the standard procedures, the shift manager lodged the incident on the customer care hotline and called the number displayed on the business card.

When UAE national Bin Saif returned to the gas station, he was overjoyed to find his wallet and all its contents in place.

He said that he is a regular customer and earlier that morning, he had bought an Infiniti Mega Raffle ticket and forgot to pick up his wallet from the box.

He thanked Engelbert personally and also called the Enoc Area Manager to express his gratitude and appreciation for Engelbert’s honesty.

“I didn’t think twice about handing over the wallet to my supervisor. Money cannot buy you good reputation and I believe in the old saying that honesty is the best policy,” said Engelbert, a former member of the Philippine Navy.

iPhone 7 vs Galaxy S6: How Apple stole Samsung's lunch

Ladies and gentlemen, it all boils down to this. After seemingly endless quarters of leading the smartphones pack, South Korean major Samsung Electronics seems to have lost substantial ground to its arch-rival Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL).

After three years of unrestrained leadership, Samsung had to settle for a tie with Apple for the spot of the world’s largest smartphone vendor, according to the latest research from Strategy Analytics.

The numbers are in, and the final quarter of 2014 saw both Apple and Samsung sell an identical number of smartphones: 74.5 million each.

But – and this is a very important but – while Samsung’s sales have slowed down 13.4 per cent from 86m during the corresponding quarter of 2013, Apple’s iPhone 6 wonder-phone helped it jump 46 per cent from 51m in Q4 2013. Read: Steve Jobs proved wrong: iPhone 6 helps Apple set world record

With both rivals uneasily poised at the same number, it will all come down to Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S6 and Apple iPhone 7 that’ll, for once and all, decide who will take or retain the leadership slot in 2015.

Samsung, however, retains the crown of world’s largest mobile phone vendor thanks to 20.5m units of dumbphones (non-smartphones) that it sold in the final quarter of 2014.

Strategy Analytics says thanks to emerging markets of China, India and Africa, global smartphone shipments grew 31 per cent annually to reach a record 380m units in the fourth quarter of 2014, up from 290.2m units in Q4 2013.

For the full year, an impressive 1.3 billion smartphones were shipped worldwide in 2014, says the report.

Apple’s iPhone 6, though, remains the hottest selling phone of the year, helping the Cupertino-based tech giant capture a record 20 per cent market share in Q4 2014, up from 18 per cent a year earlier.

“Apple’s new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models are proving wildly popular in China, US and Europe,” the report states. It is very popular in the UAE too. Read: iPhone 6 hottest selling smartphone in Dubai as DSF bargains peak

“Apple tied with Samsung to become the world’s largest smartphone vendor for the first time since Q4 2011,” states the Strategy Analytics report.

“Samsung shipped 74.5 million smartphones worldwide and captured 20 per cent market share in Q4 2013, dipping from 30 per cent in Q4 2013. Samsung continues to face intense competition from Apple at the higher-end of the smartphone market, from Huawei in the middle-tiers, and from Xiaomi and others at the entry-level,” it noted.

“Samsung may soon have to consider taking over rivals, such as Blackberry, in order to revitalise growth this year,” it added.
